Fireweed is the first flower to bloom in a forest after a wildfire.  I have seen burned black trees standing in a velvety black burned forest floor with hot pink fireweed carpeting the entire burn as far as my eyes could see.  It was amazing. Fireweed actually regenerates soils after forest fires.
Fireweed is the territorial flower for the Yukon Territory. Fireweed flowers yield a beautiful and tasty jelly.  Fireweed leaf tea is used to settle an upset stomach.  The floral essence is said to aid humans in recovering from traumatic experiences.
Fireweed blooms range from white to fuchsia and bloom from the bottom to the top.  When the last of the blooms have faded on the top it signifies the end of our short but sweet summer.  It is called “The Sourdough’s Calendar.”
