Glaciers cover approximately 29,000 square miles, or 5% of Alaska. We have approximately 100,000 glaciers, ranging from tiny cirque glaciers to huge valley glaciers.
Glaciers are formed over a number of years where more snow falls than melts. Glacier ice often appears blue to the eye because it absorbs all the colors of the spectrum except blue, which is scattered back. That scientific explanation lacks the pure magic that I see beaming in the blue of the glaciers that hang in the Chilkat Mountains across the river from our town of Haines. We look forward to the end of July when the snows of winter, that have long since melted off of our gardens, finally melt off of parts of the high hanging glaciers and we get to see that electric blue of the glaciers once again!
