Known as Aurora Borealis in Northern Latitudes, the northern lights were named after the Roman goddess of the dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for the north wind, Boreas.
Scientists say aurora borealis are produced by charged electrons and protons striking gas particles in the earth’s upper atmosphere. This jewelry is inspired by the gorgeous and shocking bright red aurora that only on rare occasions appears in our night sky. Some native Alaskan legends tell of the northern lights being their ancestors dancing and/or giving advice from the spirit world. I like that definition better than the scientific one. It is much more spirit inspiring on crisp, cold, clear sky nights when the lights are streaking across the sky like sheets and curtains, sometimes hours at a time. It makes a good evening to bundle up in a sleeping bag on the deck with a cup of hot cocoa!
