Inspired by the northern environment of her native Alaska and of arctic Sweden where she and her husband Jens spent several years, Leslie Klaar began painting in earnest in the 1980's. She settled in Homer in 1985 after visiting the area for decades with her family. She continued to pursue her interests which included commercial crab fishing and raising her children, Erika and Bjorn as well as studying art. In 1999 she and her husband opened High Tide Arts, a small local gallery located on the Homer Spit. Since that time they have added two more store locations next door expanding the products they create and represent for other artists.
Leslie is a multimedia artist working in watercolor, acrylic, pastel and collage. Being involved in a multifaceted business over the years has helped her develop a design style which leans towards painting natural scenes with a calming mood and simplicity of design in her jewelry and clothing creations. Leslie's artworks have won several awards in local and statewide juried shows. Her paintings are currently displayed at her galleries, High Tide Arts I , II and III alongside her husbands custom knives, her jewelry and clothing designs as well as artwork, photographs, embossed prints and many more handmade items created by other Alaskans. High Tide Arts I, II and III are open from Memorial Day until Labor Day located at 4306 Homer Spit Road on the Coal Point Boardwalk, Alaska. www.hightidearts-ak.com
